University of Buckingham

Buckingham is the only university independent of direct government support in the United Kingdom and has used its independence to pioneer a distinctive approach to higher education.

The University owns two main sites in Buckingham: Hunter Street (with the adjacent Chandos Road Complex) and Verney Park, a short drive away. When the University took over the Hunter Street site, most of the buildings were in a dilapidated condition, although some were of considerable architectural merit. The buildings were tastefully converted into teaching rooms, offices, libraries, science laboratories, residences, dining rooms and coffee bars.

As the University receives no grants directly from the Government, the cost of buildings and other assets has to come from donations and borrowings. Many charitable trusts and foundations, individuals and companies have demonstrated their faith in financial terms and building and conversion continues. Most recently, the Library was extended on the Hunter Street site and a new Postgraduate IT centre was developed, which opened in 2001.

Buckingham has pioneered the two-year honours degree. Studying for two years at Buckingham allows you to gain an equivalent degree to one achieved in three years elsewhere. This is made possible by our restructuring of the academic year to provide an additional term each summer. So you fit in the same number of teaching weeks as on a conventional three-year programme, but your workload in any term is no greater.

The University of Buckingham has a number of collaborative partnerships and links with other educational institutions around the world.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) ranked Buckingham top for job prospects with 97.3% (July 2014).

The Complete University Guide reported that the University ranked in the top five for Graduate Prospects (May 2014)
