The exams are done and dusted and now it’s all about the wait for the results. Although the exams are stressful, the wait for your results can be just as nerve wracking. There’s the worry of, ‘did I answer the question correctly?’ ‘Did I include that study I intended to?’ And ‘did I use the correct formula for that equation?’ Although achieving your desired exam results is important, it is not the end of the world if you don’t quite make the grade. Constant worry over the results will not affect the outcome, so instead of looking back and thinking about how you could have answered that question differently, focus on what’s next.
With the big day drawing near, it’s easy to become fixated on your results. Regardless of whether you feel confident about your grades, there are plenty of ways to distract yourself, and prevent obsessing. One way could be to just get on with studying and preparing for the next stages. A simple internet search will usually provide you with an overview of course material. Getting ahead and doing some reading before you start will certainly help. Even if you don’t get the results required to secure a place at your chosen university, doing a bit of extra reading is only going to further your understanding and could provide a good point of discussion on future applications and interviews.
Although it is not always essential to have a clear idea of what career path you wish to go down before starting university, using the few weeks before to gain some relevant experience will be really useful. The summer holidays are a great opportunity to find a placement and get some hands-on experience. Not only does this give you an insight into the world of work, but it will also help to spice up your CV. Future employers will appreciate candidates with some relevant experience under their belt.
Earning some extra cash before you set off is a great way to be productive and proactive. It is no secret that life as a university student can be an uphill struggle at times - paying rent and funding social nights out. A summer job will give you that extra boost, and also helps to establish a strong working ethic.
Of course staying productive is an excellent distraction, but making time out for yourself is equally important. There is no time like the present, and there will be lots of time for internships and work later. Utilize the time you have now before having to make a decision about your next steps. Catch up with friends, learn how to drive or go travelling and learn about the culture and history of another country whilst also relaxing after an intense couple of weeks of revision and cramming.
Waiting for exam results is of course daunting, but remember it is not the end of the world if you don’t achieve the results you hoped for. There are other options. Be prepared for the day, and ensure that you have all the information of where you will receive them; will they be online or will you need to pick them up from your school? Whatever you get, remember hwo hard you've wroked and to make the most of the time you have before starting the next chapter in your life.
Good luck!
